Many of CASA's clients are unable to drive due to age or poor health. The Transportation Program provides CASA's elderly clients with a means of traveling to scheduled medical appointments, or to other essential places such as the pharmacy or grocery store. CASA staff members coordinate community volunteers to provide this service.
Finding transportation for our elderly clients is often a difficult task as we are faced with restrictive volunteer schedules and the rising cost of gas. Rural areas of the county continue to be a problem, as we do not have many volunteers who are willing to pick someone up in those areas, bring them to the doctor in Huntsville, and then take them back out to their homes. In some cases, CASA provides the only method available for clients to meet medical appointments, which has a major positive effect on the health and lives of these clients. For instance, CASA has a client, "Ms. G" who is undergoing chemotherapy treatments. She has no family or friends who are able to take her to these critical treatments. CASA volunteers will be providing transportation to "Ms. G" 3 times a week for at least 4 weeks. Without the help of these caring volunteers, she would not be able to access the medical care she needs to assist her in her fight against cancer.
