Build Wheelchair Ramps for CASA Seniors
Categories: group, youth, short, ongoing, day of service, adult
Interests: building, repair, fixing, handyman, ramps, tools
• Description: build wheelchair ramps for elderly/ wheelchair bound clients
• Good for: Groups with members of all ages. Note: If younger children present there must be an adult to supervise. All builds are led by a CASA trained ramp supervisor.
• When: Weekday or weekend, year round
• Time Commitment: build time varies depending on ramp size. Some ramps can be completed in as little as 2 hours.
• What you need: tools (ex. saw, hammer, etc) basic building skills, ability to lift 25 pounds. CASA will provide materials and ramp sketch
• Special skills: Previous carpentry experience are a plus
• Note: All builds must be scheduled in advance

Work in the CASA Garden
Categories: Individual, group, youth, adult, short
Interests: gardening, garden, landscaping, planting
• Description: plant, weed, and harvest produce at the CASA Community Garden
• Good for: Group or individuals of all ages, Ideal for civic organizations, corporate, church, school, and family groups; perfect for day of service.
• When: work done year round, weekday or weekend
• Time Commitment: garden work shifts range from 1 to 4 hours
• What you need: ability to bend, squat, lift
• To bring: Water, sunscreen, insect repellant. Volunteers should wear close-toed shoes. CASA will provide all gardening supplies (tools, gloves, etc.)

Team Leader for the CASA Garden
Categories: adult
Interests: gardening, garden, landscaping, planting
• Description: lead volunteer groups at the CASA Garden
• Good for: individuals with good team leading skills and an interest in gardening
• When: spring and summer months
• Time Commitment: 1 or 2 evenings a month
• What you need: ability to bend, squat, lift
• Training: Volunteer will meet with a member of the CASA Garden committee to learn about CASA Garden layout, procedures
• Job Details: During inclement Weather: If thunderstorms or lightning develop while volunteers are working, Team Leader will direct the volunteers to leave the Garden immediately. If there are thunderstorms or lightning prior to the volunteer groups arrival, the CASA office will contact the Team Leader before canceling groups. Garden Leader will meet at the CASA Garden on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons before volunteers arrive; leader will stay until all volunteers leave and lock gate before leaving. Team Leader will provide a volunteer orientation including garden orientation, all volunteer paperwork, waivers etc., check in volunteers, supervise volunteer garden work, assign tasks to volunteers from chore chart in shed, supervise the assigned tasks for proper follow through, and prepare produce for delivery including weighing produce and recording all produce in vegetable log. If volunteers are delivering, prepare mixed bags of produce for delivery and assign client homes to deliver produce, conduct volunteer check out including thanking volunteers, providing any paperwork and CASA postcard, etc. and conduct garden clean up at end of shift including putting away tools and cleaning up any trash and produce around Garden.

Drive CASA Seniors to Doctor’s Appointments

Interests: transportation, driving, drive, doctor, transport, health
• Description: drive seniors to and from doctor appointments.
• Volunteers will be given one week’s notice.
• Good for: Individuals, 21+
• When: year round, weekdays.
• Time Commitment: Volunteers pick up seniors ½ hour before appointment time and drive seniors home after their appointment is over. Total time varies but ranges from 1 to 3 or more hours.
• What you need: valid Alabama drivers license with good driving record, proof of insurance, working vehicle, dependability.

Adopt a Grandparent
Categories: Individual, group, youth, adult
Interests: visiting, visit, social, homes, companion, companionship, friendship
• Description: regularly visit a senior who needs extra attention.
• Good for: Individuals of all ages; Possible group project for: Boy/Girl scout troops, school clubs, or school classrooms at one of Huntsville’s senior high rises.
• When: Week day or weekend, year round
• Time Commitment: Flexible, you set your own schedule
• What you need: compassion, good listening skills, patience

Deliver Supplies to CASA Seniors

Interest: delivery, drive, home, food
• Description: deliver needed supplies to CASA clients. Volunteers will pick up items at CASA office and take to clients’ homes. Examples: food box, produce from the CASA Garden, heaters, fans.
• Good for: Groups or Individuals of all ages
• When: Weekday or weekend, year-round
• Time Commitment: Flexible depending on the number of items delivered; Can be as short as 10 minutes to an entire day.
• What you need: dependability, mode of transportation; One person must have a driver’s license.
• Note: Volunteers must be reliable. The items delivered to CASA clients are essential, and if taken from the office by a volunteer must be delivered in a timely manner, preferably on the same day.

Install Grab Bars & Handrails for CASA Seniors

• Description: install grab bars and handrails in seniors’ homes to prevent falls; Typical locations: bathroom, hall, stairs.
• Good for: Individuals, 18+
• When: Weekday or weekend, year-round
• Time commitment: typical installation for 1 handrail/grab bar is 1 hour
• What you need: working knowledge of grab bar/ handrail installation, basic knowledge of home repair
• To bring: Tools needed to install grab bar/handrails. CASA will supply the grab bars and handrails.
• Note: CASA will train new volunteers about our specific installation procedure

Design Ramps for CASA Seniors

Interests: design, building, sketch
• Description: Visit homes and evaluate for installation of wheelchair ramps. Issues include ramp placement, length, etc. Make a sketch for CASA volunteers to use when building our client's ramp.
• Good for: Individuals, 18+ ; Ideal for engineers, contractors, architects
• When: Weekday or weekend, year round
• Time Commitment: flexible, depends on your schedule
• What you need: basic knowledge of design, carpentry or building skills
• Note: CASA will train new volunteers in our evaluation, sketching, and building procedures

Handy Man for CASA Seniors

• Description: perform minor home repairs that CASA's seniors are unable to do because of their age. Examples: door replacement, window repair and door lock installation
• Good for: Groups or individuals of all ages; Ideal project for civic organizations; corporate, church, school, and family groups; Perfect for day of service
• When: Weekday or weekend, year-round
• Time Commitment: Most projects can be completed in an afternoon
• What you need: basic home repair skills
• To bring: Tools needed for each repair job. CASA provides the materials for all jobs

Chores for CASA Seniors

• Description: perform basic chores that CASA's seniors are unable to do because of their age. Examples: install smoke detectors, replace light bulbs and batteries, exterior painting
• Good for: Groups or individuals of all ages. Note: If younger children present there must be an adult to supervise. Ideal project for civic organizations; corporate, church, school, and family groups. Perfect for day of service.
• When: Weekday or weekend, year-round
• Time Commitment: most projects can be completed in an afternoon
• What you need: very basic home repair skills
• To bring: Tools needed for each job. CASA provides the materials for all jobs

• When: Weekday or weekend, year-round
• Time Commitment: all projects can be completed in an afternoon; depending on the ramp size could take as little as 1 hour

Perform Yard Work for CASA Seniors

• Description: perform yard work such as raking leaves, trimming hedges, mowing grass for CASA seniors
• Good for: Group or individuals of all ages. Ideal for civic organizations; corporate, church, school, and family groups; perfect for day of service
• When: Weekday or weekend, year-round
• Time commitment: Varies, depending on the yard. Most projects can be completed in an afternoon, some as little as 1 hour
• What you need: physical ability to work in the yard
• To bring: Tools needed for each job (rakes, lawn mower, gasoline, etc.)
• Note: All projects must be scheduled in advance

Keep CASA Seniors Warm (TEMP$)

Interests: building, repair, fixing, handyman, tools, chores, winter
• Description: Volunteers perform tasks that keep clients home warmer. Example tasks: caulking, insulating pipes, covering windows with plastic, small home repairs
• Good for: Groups or individuals of all ages. Ideal for civic organizations; corporate, church, school, and family groups
• When: November, Weekend (1st Saturday of November)
• Time Commitment: flexible, depending on amount of work. Most teams finish in as little as 3-4 hours, some in as little as 1 hour
• What you need: ability to perform minor home repairs
• To bring: tools (hammers, drills, measuring tape etc.). CASA provides all materials (plastic, caulk, etc.)

Collect Supplies for CASA Seniors

• Description: For a great group or individual project, collect any combination of needed supplies for CASA seniors. After collection, bring the items to the CASA office for us to distribute or take the project one step further and deliver the items to our seniors.
• Good for: Groups or Individuals of all ages. Ideal for civic organizations; corporate, church, school, and family groups
• When: Weekday or weekend, year round
• Time Commitment: flexible, collection and delivery can be done on your schedule
• What you need: (if delivering items) dependable vehicle, valid Alabama driver’s license with good driving record, proof of insurance
